GM earns sixth ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Sustained Excellence award

General Motors picked up its sixth consecutive EPA ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Award for Sustained Excellence earlier this month, making the automaker one of just 17 ENERGY STAR industrial partners to earn the award in 2017.

“The ENERGY STAR program’s benchmarking and modeling helps reduce our carbon footprint, while also saving GM millions of dollars,” said Alicia Boler Davis, executive vice president of Global Manufacturing. “We continue to introduce the program to our suppliers so they, too, can further increase operational efficiency and realize financial and environmental benefits from energy conservation.”

General Motors saved $73 million in energy costs and cut 388,000 metric tons of carbon emissions from its operations in 2016. Energy use at its United States-based plants decreased 10% per vehicle in 2016 thanks in large part to $20 million in energy-saving projects and a new energy management system at non-manufacturing facilities that is expected to save $2 million per year.

Enterprise Data Center

In 2016 alone, 15 General Motors facilities earned ENERGY STAR certification, including the Enterprise Data Center in Warren, one of only 104 data centers in the United States to earn certification and the first for any automaker. One of the methods used to help Enterprise Data Center earn ENERGY STAR certification is an innovative system that utilizes the natural temperature of the environment to naturally chill water used for in-row cooling of the center’s equipment, which is used to support the automaker’s global IT infrastructure.

General Motors appeared on CDP’s Climate A List in 2016 for many of these same reasons. General Motors intends to cut energy and carbon intensity by 20% by a 2020 deadline.
