Genesis New York Concept Debut hybrid sports sedan presentation

While the Hyundai brand has its sights on Toyota with its new IONIQ hybrid, its sister brand Genesis is targeting BMW. The recently-founded premium brand unveiled a highly-anticipated concept car today that sets the pace for what the automaker has in store.

At the 2016 New York Auto Show, Genesis is parading the New York Concept, a four-door sports sedan that’s clearly rivaling the popular BMW 3 Series. The premium Korean brand is already targeting the BMW 7 Series with its G90 flagship sedan and the BMW 5 Series with its G80 (the rebadged Hyundai Genesis). Clearly, Genesis is setting its sights on a certain German performance niche.

Can You Guess? Which Hyundai is the fastest-selling model?

Genesis Shows Off Impressive New York Concept Hybrid at NY Auto Show

The stylish New York Concept from Genesis is a two-door sports sedan that runs on a 2.0 GDi 245ps hybrid engine with eight-speed automatic transmission. Utilizing the Athletic Elegance design language also seen in the Vision G concept, this elongated model’s body lines look like they’re ready to pounce.

“The New York Concept is a progressive concept car that showcases the design quality of the brand,” stated Manfred Fitzgerald, Head of Genesis. “With its expressive volumes and refined design, the New York Concept truly embodies the ‘Athletic Elegance,’ that characterizes Genesis products and will continue to do so for future models that come from our luxury brand. Revealing the concept in New York is a fitting opportunity for Genesis.”

In its current form, the Genesis New York Concept is not a production model, but it does have aspects that will be utilized in future Genesis models–for instance the 242 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque.

It’s been merely six months since the announcement of the Genesis brand’s formation, and already it’s filled its lineup with multiple promising vehicles. The automaker is off to a good start, as long as concept models like the New York Concept don’t get watered down when becoming a reality.
