After a slow, yet steady start, the Genesis brand seems to be picking up steam

When the Genesis brand was first spun off from Hyundai, there were those who felt that the new luxury motor division would be an instant failure. As the first three quarters of 2017 come to a close, however, Genesis is only continuing to grow in terms of sales. Meanwhile, it is the Hyundai brand proper that is suffering sales losses.

Last month, Hyundai sold 55,271 vehicles in the U.S. Compared to the 65,399 vehicles it sold in September of 2016, this accounts for a 15.5% sales decline. A major source of Hyundai’s declining sales was its Elantra sedan. While the Elantra continues to be the brand’s best-selling model, it only sold 14,401 units in September. When compared to the 19,382 Elantras sold in September 2016, the results are a 25.7% sales decline.

Year-to-date, Hyundai has sold 143,067 Elantra sedans. As a result, sales are on a 8.9% decline when compared to the Elantra’s performance during the first three quarters of 2016.

The Elantra’s smaller cousin, the Hyundai Accent, also lost sales year-over-year. However, the decline was far less severe for the Accent model, amounting to only 1.5%.

Several of Hyundai’s SUVs, meanwhile, are experiencing some impressive sales growth. Hyundai sold 11,420 Santa Fe models last month, slightly more than the 11,350 it sold during September last year.
