Geneva Tease: Toyota i-TRIL Autonomous Concept
Toyota is always trying to be different and invent new things, but do its concept cars really need to have such bizarre names?
The automaker has dropped the first teaser image of an all-new concept car called the i-TRIL, which will is set to premiere at the upcoming 2017 Geneva Motor Show in March.
We’re not sure if “TRIL” is supposed to stand for something, though the “i” portion seems to be a letter Toyota likes to slap on its concepts to indicate autonomous driving technology if the Concept-i it showed off at the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas is anything to go by.
The i-TRIL, then, is an electrically-powered concept equipped with autonomous driving tech, though Toyota claims it will be more than just a self-driving car. The automaker says it will represent a viable alternative to “A and B segment cars, other EV products, and motorcycles for those who still wish to have fun whilst driving even at slow speeds in the urban environment.”
The concept is being co-developed by Toyota’s European branch and the ED2 design studio in Nice, France. It has a 1+2 seating layout and, interestingly, features an “Active Lean” technology that angles the car during cornering to improve stability. We’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for that.
The Toyota i-TRIL will join the new WRC-inspired Yaris hot hatch and full lineup of Toyota Gazoo Racing vehicles at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, so make sure to stay tuned!
