George Talley’s Corvette Found after 33 Years
Detroit native George Talley’s Corvette disappeared 33 years ago, just a few miles from GM world headquarters. Today, Talley and his ’79 Vette were reunited at the very same world headquarters, thanks to the help of Mark Reuss, executive vice president for GM Product Development.
The story started gaining traction when on June 13, 2014, Talley, 71, received a phone call from AAA letting him know that his car had been found way down in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Talley was caught incredibly off guard, as he had not seen the ’79 Chevy since he left it parked on Jefferson Avenue in 1981.
“It was a lucky day to hear that my car had been found,” Talley exclaimed. “They told me it was running, had 47,000 miles on it and was ready for me to pick up!”
A true diehard ‘Vette fan (he has been one since he saw his neighbor’s first-gen Corvette back in the ‘50s), Talley went on to own three more Corvettes. The 1979 Corvette was always his favorite, however.
When Reuss heard Talley’s story on the news, he decided to ship the car back home for Talley on his own dime.
“George’s story brought a smile to my face,” said Reuss. “As a longtime Corvette owner myself, I know the passion the car inspires. I also knew that car belonged home in Detroit, with its rightful owner, and we could make that happen.”
