GM Again Present on Dow Jones Sustainability Index
Today General Motors announced that the company has been ranked once again on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index for corporate sustainability leadership in the automotive industry. This marks GM’s second year as an index component, and the company retains its claim as the only automaker on the North American index.
The Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) uses investment firm RobecoSAM’s analysis of financially relevant environmental, social, and governance factors to track leading sustainability-driven companies.
“The DJSI ranking demonstrates that GM is doing business with a greater sense of purpose,” said Craig Glidden, GM executive vice president of public policy and general counsel. “This practice benefits our customers and employees, and helps us better serve the communities where we work around the world.”

GM’s score actually increased this year by 5 points, with higher rankings in 14 of 22 categories, including perfect scores in climate strategy and brand management. GM also scored highly in the index’s new materiality category, which grades sustainability issues linked to business drivers.
The DJSI is also more focused on human rights issues this year, which is why the index rewarded GM for joining the UN Global Compact last year, which creates guiding principles in the areas of human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption.
Additionally, GM CEO Marry Barra recently joined 13 other automotive CEOs at the World Economic Forum to express support for the vision of a decarbonized auto industry. The company also launched a Do Your Part recycling initiative, which involved recycling plastic water bottles into various items, including coats for the homeless.
