General Motors frequently partners with its hometown baseball team, the Detroit Tigers, for promotional endeavors—like the Chevrolet Fountain in centerfield, which prominently features a new Camaro SS and Colorado pickup this season. Last week, though, the automaker and MLB team joined forces to do something special for the community.

On Friday, GM partnered with the Tigers, US Chamber of Commerce, Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency, and over 100 local employers to host a job fair and career training workshop for US military veterans and their spouses.

The “Hiring Our Heroes” event took place on July 15, 2016, at the Tigers’ home stadium, Comerica Park. The expo featured a job seeker skills workshop and hiring fair. Additionally, eligible attendees received two free tickets to watch the Tigers defeat their division rival Kansas City Royals 4-2.

“Our ongoing support of Hiring Our Heroes is a ‘win-win’ for our company, veterans, and their families,” said GM Chief Diversity Officer Ken Barrett, who himself is a retired US Navy captain. “The program offers our team access to a diverse and talented group of candidates while offering returning vets the opportunity to discover rewarding careers with top companies in their local community.”

During the career fair, veteran members of the GM Veterans Group, GM Human Resources, and the United Auto Workers (UAW) answered questions from the prospective candidates.

General Motors facilities across the US currently employ over 14,000 veterans, and for two consecutive years, GM has been the only automaker to be named a top employer for veterans and their spouses by G.I. Jobs magazine, Military Spouse magazine, and Military Times.
