General Motors Technical Center Expansion

General Motors has announced plans to break ground next year on a new studio building that will connect to its current Design Center at its Michigan-based Global Technical Center. The expansion is part of General Motors’ multi-year, $1 billion investment in revitalizing the center and should be completed within two to three years’ time.

“We can only begin to predict how mobility will change in future generations,” said Michael Simcoe, vice president of Global Design for General Motors. “Investing in our creative and skilled team and providing them with inspiring, modern spaces, new technologies, and more ways to work together will foster innovation that leads to real solutions for customers.”

General Motors Technical Center Expansion

GM began its Global Technical Center revamp in May 2015, not long after it was declared a National Historic Landmark by the Department of the Interior and National Park Service and had renovations completed on its GM Design Dome and Auditorium in 2014. The addition of the studio building will effectively double the size of GM’s design studios, with the 360,000-squre-foot addition complementing the existing 350,000-square-foot design center.

Among the renovations made to the 60-plus-year-old campus are those made to the Vehicle Engineering Center, Pre-Production Operations, Engineering West and South, and Alternative Energy Center. The latter received a new Structural Development Lab.

The General Motors Technical Center originally opened in 1956; the opening ceremony was attended by President of the United States Dwight D. Eisenhower.
