General Motors today announced plans for Warren Technical Center’s bike share program, which, when implemented, will allow its 19,000 employees to commute around campus on bikes, rather than car or shuttle. The plan is green, healthy, and really convenient, as it eliminates the sometimes difficult search for parking when one is running late to a meeting.

To implement the bike share program, GM has teamed up with Zagster, which has created several similar programs at other businesses.

“GM is investing not only in the long-term health and productivity of its workforce, but sending a strong message to other employers around the country that bike sharing is a mainstream transportation option for employees,” said Timothy Ericson, co-founder and CEO of Zagster.

Employees will be able to use the Zagster bikes throughout the 330-acre campus to go between the 61 buildings at Warren. Before accessing a bike, an employee must register online and then reserve one through a text message or a smartphone app, which will give them an access code to unlock a bike. The program even boasts Zagster’s geofencing technology, powered by solar energy panels, for an even greener experience.

Bikes feature a basket to transport meeting essentials, like a laptop or briefcase. Riders are required to wear helmets and use the bells to alert pedestrians of their approach.

“This is an awesome idea,” commented John Waechter, designing engineer at the Tech Center. “I can’t wait to quickly get to meetings without walking to a car and finding parking. This is good for exercise, good for on-campus mobility and a nice way to actually learn more about non-auto transportation.”
