In 2016, seemingly everything is done online. That includes the old practice of ribbon-cutting apparently, as GM Canada president and managing director Steve Carlisle and Communitech CEO Iain Klugman cut a “digital ribbon” to open the “2908 at Communitech” innovation lab.

“One of GM’s top priorities is to disrupt traditional automotive business models, including our own, in order to anticipate our customers’ needs, today and long into the future,” said Carlisle. “With changing technology, we see tremendous opportunities for GM, Ontario and Canada in an automotive future that is increasingly electric, connected, shared and autonomous. With ‘2908 at Communitech’, we will knock down old approaches, find new partners and boldly go where future mobility is headed.”

The name is derived from imagining where General Motors, founded in Canada in 1908, will be in 1,000 years’ time. 2908 at Communitech will explorer and experiment with everything from smartphone apps and ride-sharing to urban and multi-modal transportation.

GM recently announced a $500 million investment in Lyft, which will ultimately result in the development of autonomous ride-sharing vehicles.
