With a wildfire devastating much of the Fort McMurray area and leaving hundreds upon hundreds of Canadians homeless, General Motors Canada has announced that it will give $100,000 to the Canadian Red Cross to help support aid efforts. At an individual level, GM Canada’s employees, dealers, and distributors are also doing whatever they can to aid those affected by the fires, as well as employees of GM Financial.

“On behalf of all of the extended GM Canada family, we admire and support the resiliency and determination of those individuals and families affected by the devastating fires in Alberta,” said Steve Carlisle, president and managing director, General Motors of Canada. “We commend the efforts of everyone who have come to their aid and demonstrated overwhelming compassion to those in need.”

GM also notes that it made OnStar Crisis Assist available for its customers in the Fort McMurray area.

The wildfires, which are still being fought today, have resulted in the loss of 2,400 buildings and more than 1,370 square miles of burned land. While it is too early to accurately estimate the sum total of damage the fires have done, the end result will be the single costliest disaster in the history of Canada.

GM of Canada calls Oshawa, Ontario its headquarters, and it employs in excess of 9,000 people the country over.

Individuals wishing to help those affected by the wildfires are encouraged to contribute to the Alberta Fires Appeal. Donations can be made online at www.redcross.ca, by calling 1-800-418-1111, or by contacting your nearest Canadian Red Cross office.
