General Motors CEO Mary Barra was awarded the “Honorary Golden Steering Wheel 2016” at Bild am Sonntag and Auto Bild’s Golden Steering Wheel awards ceremony in Berlin earlier this week. Barra was on-hand to accept the award and was accompanied by Opel Group CEO Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann and Vice President Communications Johan Willems.

“Technology leadership has been at the core of the Opel brand since it was founded in 1862, and it continues to drive the company today,” said Barra. “General Motors and Opel are working together to define and lead the future of personal mobility, in Germany, in Europe, and around the world.”
According to a jury composed of Bild am Sonntag and Auto Bild readers and experts as well as celebrities, Barra was granted the “Honorary Oscar” because she “is responsible for the renaissance of General Motors” and “has led the company into the future by establishing a new corporate culture, advancing trend-setting models, and entering innovative business areas for GM.”
Barra was also praised for ensuring that the success of the Opel brand has remained a key component of General Motors’ plans, and was credited for the brand’s upward momentum since taking her position atop the company.
Dr. Neumann added: “We are proud to have a leader like Mary Barra at the helm at General Motors. She has a clear vision for GM that we are realizing together and that has played a key role in getting Opel back on the track to success.”
Last year, the Opel Astra won the Golden Steering Wheel, marking its 16th for vehicles. Barra’s award is the first Opel has received at an honorary level.
