As could be reasonably expected with the eventual launch of production for the all-new 2016 Chevrolet Volt, GM plans to axe production on the previous-generation Volt. With the new Volt expected to arrive by the fall, the end of the road for the 2015 Volt is very nigh.

According to Edmunds, GM will suspend production of the 2015 Volt in late May, with GM spokeswoman Michelle Malcho citing a “good supply on the ground” as one of the motivating factors in cutting off production so early. Estimates in California place the current supply of Volts as enough to supply dealers for 100 days, meaning that dealerships in the Volt’s largest market will likely be well-stocked into mid-August—right up against the 2016 Volt’s rollout.

Sales of the Volt in the US have been down sharply through the first three months of 2015; the decline in sales can be attributed to a number of factors including but not limited to lower gas prices across the country, shifting consumer trends that favor pickups and small crossovers, and the impending release of the 2016 model.

While production on the 2015 Volt is ending, this will not impact the production of other vehicles manufactured at GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant, including the Chevrolet ImpalaCadillac ELR, Chevrolet Malibu, and Cadillac CT6.
