General Motors brought consumers in China a taste of the future today when it demonstrated its latest connected vehicle technology (V2X) at the National Intelligent and Connected Vehicle Test Demo Base in Shanghai. GM’s V2X technology includes Intersection Collision Alert and Emergency Brake Alert.

“GM has been a leader in developing intelligent V2X technology for more than a decade,” said Dr. John Du, director of the GM China Science Lab. “We are pleased to bring our latest global achievements in V2X technology to China. The newly opened Demo Base provides an excellent location to carry on our research on intelligent and connected vehicles in China.”

GM is one of the first automakers to demonstrate V2X technology in China, and it plans to bring vehicle-to-vehicle technology to the United States market proper with the debut of the Dedicated Short Range Communication spectrum on the 2017 Cadillac CTS. V2X encompasses vehicle-to-vehicle communications, as well as vehicle-to-infrastructure and vehicle-to-pedestrian communications.

General Motors would likely later look to apply its V2V technology not only to Cadillacs, but to Chevrolet and Buick—the latter of the two being one of the most popular in all of China—as well as Baojun, Jiefang, and Wuling vehicles.

The National Intelligent and Connected Vehicle Test Demo Base will provide GM the opportunity to perfect the technology, offering full access to Wi-Fi, LTE-V, and DSRC. It supports demonstrations for 29 different safety-minded technologies, and it is likely to expand that support well beyond 100 by the end of next year.
