GM Foundation Pledges $1 Million to STEM Education for Latinos
GM representatives present grant money totaling $1 million at the National Press Club
General Motors Foundation will donate a combined $1 million in grants to help ensure that Latino students will benefit from cutting-edge STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education around the country.
The issuance of the grants was announced Thursday at the National Press Club in Washington D.C. by General Motors Vice President of Global Quality Grace Lieblein, who was joined by GM Foundation Vice President Lori Wingerter, GM Chief Diversity Officer Ken Barrett, and US Representative Tony Cardenas (D-Calif), as well as representatives from various other Hispanic organizations.
“Hispanics represent an important facet of our business as the next generation of leaders and innovators, and also our customers,” Lieblein said. “At GM, we want to help fund vital programs aimed at increasing opportunities for Latinos to pursue STEM careers and strengthen their skills to compete for jobs.”
Nineteen Hispanic groups will benefit from grants that will be but toward strengthening STEM-oriented programs. These groups include: American GI Forum; ASPIRA; Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute; Cuban American National Council, Nurturing Hispanic Communities; Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute; Great Minds in Stem; Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities; Hispanic Association on Corporate Responsibility; Hispanic Heritage Foundation; Hispanic Scholarship Fund; Latin Americans for Social and Economic Development; League of United Latin American Citizens; LULAC National Education Service Centers; MANA; National Council of La Raza; National Puerto Rican Coalition; SER National; Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers; and United States Hispanic Leadership Institute.
