Dan Nicholson, General Motors’ Vice President, Global Powertrain, will soon be taking the reins of the International Federation of Automotive Engineering Societies, and he tells Automotive News that he intends to use his standing as FISITA president to push for a new global standard for emissions testing.

Nicholson told Auto News at this week’s FISITA summit in London that the task of getting some kind of synthesis between EU tailpipe emissions standards and the United States’ EPA standards will be a difficult task that will take some time and effort to bear to affect, but that the overlap between testing procedures is more significant than most think.

“We want all our engineering resources focused on improving air quality and reducing CO2. With different sets of rules, we have to put our engineering resources into nuanced regulatory differences rather than working on the root problem,” he said.

Nicholson says that timing for his proposal is key, as China is currently in the midst of working on its own emissions standards and the opportunity exists to bring them to the table in order to create a new global standard.
