General Motors India began production of the Chevrolet Beat today at its Talegaon, Maharashtra manufacturing facility, which is the first vehicle built in India that will ultimately be sold in Mexico. The Beat is set to go on sale in Mexico this December, and all models sold there will be exported directly from India.

Last year, GM India began exporting vehicles from the Talegaon plant to Chile.

“In keeping with our commitment to the Make in India program, we are proud to produce exciting Chevrolet vehicles for the Mexican market,” said Arvind Saxena, president and managing director of GM India. “Exports will be an important and ever-growing part of our business. This is part of GM’s strategy to make India a global export hub.”

Saxena added that GM is looking into additional future export markets. The Talegaon plant currently operates with a maximum annual output of 130,000 vehicles, and that number is expected to reach 220,000 vehicles per year by 2025. As much as 30% of all vehicles built at Talegaon will be exported to markets outside of India.
