GM India to Officially Close Halol Plant on April 28
It was reported back in January that Chinese automaker SAIC Motor Corp plans to acquire Indian manufacturing assets belonging to its partner, General Motors. Although a final sale has still not been brokered, today GM India confirmed the closing of its Halol manufacturing facility, which the automaker says will officially close on April 28, 2017, as the company consolidates manufacturing at its Talegaon facility.
Halol is one of the oldest facilities that the American automaker has in the country.
“We will support our employees at the Halol plant throughout this transition,” said GM India President and Managing Director Kaher Kazem. “We have in place the options of a significantly enhanced separation package or continuity of employment at our Talegaon plant.”
According to General Motors India, that transition support for employees will include financial counseling and tax advice. The company will also provide information and transition support for the employees that are transferring from Halol to the Talegaon manufacturing facility.
GM India also says that it is working with the country’s government authorities and labor unions, along with the employees and suppliers affected by the move, to ensure an orderly transition.
“We thank our employees at the Halol plant for their hard work and professionalism,” said Kazem. “We also want to sincerely thank our suppliers and the government of Gujarat for their support of our manufacturing operations at Halol.”
Kazem also stated that GM India is going to continue to work towards the asset-only sale of its Halol site.
