General Motors Korea reported sales totaling 42,401 vehicles in January, down 9.5% year-over-year and down 6.7% month over month. Domestic sales tumbled 32.6% to 7,844 vehicles delivered, and export sales fell 1.8% at 34,557 vehicles. Despite the continued decline in sales, no doubt a significant contributor to the decision to shutter its manufacturing plant in Gunsan, General Motors remains optimistic about the success of its products.

“With the 2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV selling out within three hours of the opening of pre-orders, we are seeing positive interest among consumers in our Chevrolet products,” said Dale Sullivan, GM Korea vice president of Vehicle Sales, Service, and Marketing. “We will continue to ride this momentum by delivering the Bolt EVs to customers starting in April. In addition, we will support those who wish to make a new start in February by offering various benefits through the Happy Chevy New Year promotion in the run-up to Lunar New Year—the biggest national holiday in Korea.”

General Motors’ domestic sales were down 33.8% from December 2017, with just one product seeing month-over-month sales increases—the Aveo, up 171.1% with 103 delivered. Sales of the Captiva were flat month-to-month at 151 vehicles delivered. Year-over-year, only the Cruze saw sales rise—up 112.7% with 487 delivered.

In terms of exports, GM saw a 2.8% month-to-month increase thanks to an uptick in sales of its miniature, intermediate, and mid-sized vehicles. Exports of the Chevrolet Trax totaled 21,333 vehicles. CKD exports totaled 40,074 vehicles, down 36% year-over-year but up 4.8% month-over-month.
