GM Moving 2018 GMC Terrain Production from Canada to Mexico

Automotive News reported on Monday that General Motors will move production of the newly-unveiled GMC Terrain from the CAMI Assembly Plant in Ingersoll, Ontario to two preexisting manufacturing facilities in Mexico in order to make room for more production of the new Chevrolet Equinox.
The move will allow GM to keep up on demand for the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox, which it anticipates will be a popular contender in the ever-competitive compact SUV segment. The Terrain will be built at two facilities in Mexico that already have the capability to handle the SUV’s production, and some of the production capacity is said to have already been earmarked for models to be sold in other overseas markets.

Duncan Aldred, vice president of global GMC sales and marketing, said that GM has “been planning this for a long time, and we’re using our existing footprint.”
If one senses a somewhat defensive tone, this is likely due to the ominous specter of a tiny-fingered manbaby looming overhead. The decision to move production to Mexico, one that is noted as likely being motivated by lower production costs, is one that is made at the risk of drawing attention from the president-elect.
Aldred did not offer comment on the potential trade policies of the incoming administration. Kristin Dziczek, analyst at the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor, Michigan, did offer Auto News her two cents: “I’m sure we’ll see a tweet.”

The 2018 Terrain, revealed this weekend prior to the start of the 2017 Detroit Auto Show, will be offered with three turbocharged engine options, including a turbo-diesel.
