William F. Bertagni, a 30-year veteran of the Product Development field and the current Vice President of Product Engineering at General Motors South America, has been appointed the new Vice President of Vehicle Engineering for Europe effective April 1st. Bertagni replaces Charles Klein in the role as the head of the International Technical Development Center, as he has been named GM’s Executive Director of Global CO2 Strategy and Energy Center. Bertagni also takes Klein’s spot on the Adam Opel AG board.

Bertagni will report to Opel Group CEO Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann and Ken Kelzer, Vice President, Global Vehicle Components and Subsystems.

“We would like to welcome William F. Bertagni. His deep technical background, global experience and leadership will be an asset to our team. His job is to continue driving our model offensive,” said Neumann.

“I would also like to thank Charlie Klein for his contributions as we have successfully launched a range of vehicles and technologies during his tenure including OnStar and the award winning new Astra,” Neumann added. “Charlie also played a major role in the cooperation with our important joint venture partners PSA Peugeot-Citroen and Renault.”

Bertagni has served a number of roles during his tenure at GM, including numerous positions in different locales. Bertagni, prior to his stint in South America, was the Global Vehicle Chief Engineer for Small Cars in Korea and the General Director of Engineering Center and Vehicle Chief Engineer for General Motors Brazil. Prior to those roles, he worked as an engineer at Rüsselsheim between 1991-94.
