GM Patents Make Automaker a Top Innovator
For the eleventh consecutive quarter, General Motors is the overall industry leader in terms of patent filings, according to the Patent Board. The board reported that 1,643 GM patents were achieved last year. In addition, the Clean Energy Patent Growth Index indicates that GM is at the head of the pack in terms of U.S. clean energy patents granted since 2002.
“Patents are an indicator of the potential for the GM enterprise to innovate,” said Jon Lauckner, GM chief technology officer, vice president of Global R&D and president of GM Ventures. “Thriving companies have a track record of creating and commercializing innovation, and we are striving every day to discover technological breakthroughs that create tangible benefits for our customers around the globe.”

Karl R. Wilhelm added, “GM is the only company to have achieved the No. 1 position 11 consecutive times in the Patent Board’s Automotive and Transportation industry ranking. GM’s contribution to innovation in its industry has clearly put it ahead of its competitors.”
Over 24 GM patents alone have been for the all-new eight-speed automatic gearbox for the Corvette Stingray, and more than 500 patents have been awarded for GM’s OnStar technology over the last 18 years. In addition, GM led all companies in fuel cell patents in 2013, and has claimed this honor since 2002.
