GM Recognized as Best for Vets Employer by Military Times

Today General Motors announced that for the second consecutive year, it is the only automaker recognized by Military Times in its Best for Vets: Employers 2016 rankings. The Best for Vets list recognizes company cultures and policies that cater to military veterans.
“The recognition is a credit to the ongoing hard work of our military affairs, veteran hiring and employee resource group leaders,” said GM Chief Diversity Officer Ken Barrett, himself a former US Navy captain. “Veterans bring a unique perspective and strong work ethic—and make us a better, stronger company.”
Military Times determines which companies are deserving of the award with a rigorous 90-question survey that analyzes a company’s efforts to connect with veterans and provide an environment that enables them to succeed. “We applaud GM’s ongoing efforts to hire and support its veteran employees, and we hope they inspire others in their industry to become ‘Best for Vets’ employers in 2017,” said Peter Lundquist, president of Sightline Media Group and general manager of Military Times.
GM has a long history of supporting the US military that dates back to 1917, when 90% of GM’s truck production was focused on WWI manufacturing. During the Second World War, GM converted all of its plant facilities to answer FDR’s call for an “Arsenal of Democracy.” To date, GM has produced more military vehicles than any other manufacturer in history.
Today, GM facilities across the US employ over 14,000 veterans, and the automaker also supports military families through its partnerships with Building for America’s Bravest, Hiring Our Heroes, and the Achilles Freedom Team.
This year, GM was also the only automaker to be named a top employer for military veterans and their spouses by both Military Spouse and GI Jobs magazines.
