GM Sets First Half Record for Retail Crossover Sales After Strong June
General Motors’ June sales totaled 243,155 vehicles, down 4.7% year-over-year, and 202,908 vehicles at retail, down 3.1% year-over-year. Despite the year-over-year loss of sales volume, June was a massive month for GM crossovers, which were up 22% at retail.
GM’s heaviest-hitting mid-size crossovers, compact crossovers, and utility vehicles pulled down impressive retail sales gains in June. Sales of the Chevy Equinox were up 36%, sales of the Buick Envision more than doubled year-over-year, sales of the new Cadillac XT5 were up 29%, and sales of the new GMC Acadia were up 25%. Further, the Chevy Bolt EV saw deliveries totaling 1,425 vehicles as its nationwide rollout continues to catch on.

“Our crossover renaissance began last year with the introduction of the all-new GMC Acadia and Cadillac XT5, and continued this year with the Chevrolet Bolt EV and Equinox,” said Kurt McNeil, US vice president of Sales Operations. “The all-new Equinox is off to a strong start and we will leverage that momentum as we introduce four additional crossovers in the second half of 2017.”
Retail GM crossover sales are up 23% at retail in the first half, hitting the highest total sales in company history.
Buick saw a 6.2% retail sales increase in June with 17,042 vehicles delivered, Chevrolet’s retail sales for the month were down 1.5% at 138,996 vehicles delivered, GMC retail sales dropped 9.5% with 35,016 vehicles delivered, and Cadillac retail sales fell 12.1% with 11,854 vehicles delivered.
Through the first half of 2017, GM’s retail sales are more or less flat at 1,133,045 vehicles delivered. Buick is the only brand to see year-over-year gains with a 7.5% increase at 100,479 vehicles delivered. Chevy sales total 752,702 vehicles, down 0.7%; Cadillac sales total 64,477 vehicles, down 1.7%; and GMC sales are down 2% at 215,387 vehicles.
