General Motors teamed with the Detroit Tigers, Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency, and US Chamber of Commerce to bring together more than 50 Detroit-area employers at the Hiring Our Heroes job fair and career training workshop on Thursday. The focus of the gathering was to give US military veterans the opportunity to seek employment and gain the knowledge necessary to pursue new career paths as they reintegrate themselves into civilian life.

“Our ongoing support of Hiring Our Heroes is a ‘win-win’ for our company, veterans and their families,” said GM Chief Diversity Officer and retired US Navy captain Ken Barrett. “The program offers our team access to a diverse and talented group of candidates while offering returning vets the opportunity to discover rewarding careers with top companies in their local community.”

The event consisted of a career training expo that began at 9 am and a hiring fair that ran from 11:15 am to 2:30 pm. GM has served as the role of sponsor for Hiring Our Heroes through a number of similar events held across the country. Earlier this year, GM headquarters played host to the Disney’s Veterans Institute, another day-long event focused on helping veterans.  Since 2012, Hiring Our Heroes has helped more than 500,000 veterans find new jobs.
