GM Top Safety Pick+ Rated Vehicles Now Include Equinox, Terrain

GMC Terrain Joins GM Top Safety Pick+ Vehicles for 2014

The 2014 Chevy Equinox and the 2014 GMC Terrain now join the all-new Malibu as GM Top Safety Pick+ vehicles, according to recent testing conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The Equinox and the Terrain are the only two of nine tested midsized SUVs to earn ratings of Good in the Institute’s small overlap front crash test.

GMC Terrain Joins GM Top Safety Pick+ Vehicles for 2014This test involves 25 percent of the vehicle’s front end (driver’s side) colliding with a 5-foot high barrier at 40 mph, as this is a very common accident—a driver striking something like a tree, utility pole, or another vehicle.

“Having the only two midsize SUVs that earned the Top Safety Pick Plus designation speaks to GM’s focus on improving our vehicles by offering advanced crash avoidance technologies that can help avoid a crash, and by enhancing vehicle structure and occupant protection if a crash occurs,” said Gay Kent, director of General Motors Global Safety Strategy and Vehicle Programs. He added, “We are very pleased that the IIHS has recognized the safety of both the Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain with this prestigious rating.”

Previously, the Equinox and the Terrain had been named Top Safety Picks. To achieve the new Top Safety Pick+ status, models have to receive the top rating of Good in four out of five safety tests, with no less than an Acceptable in the fifth test. In addition, vehicles have to offer a frontal crash protection system. Both the Equinox and the Terrain earned Good ratings in all five tests and feature available forward collision alert technology.
