The thought of doing factory work isn’t too appealing to many in the millennial generation, several of whom have only vague aspirations of “working in social media” or landing a big advertising job. (Thanks a lot, Madmen.) GM in particular is having trouble attracting younger workers to its factories, where, according to Automotive News, the auto giant currently has 70,000 unfilled manufacturing jobs in Michigan alone.

That seems to be why GM is using Google Glass and other “hip” technologies in the workplace—to draw a younger crowd in to its manufacturing positions. (Though, when we put it that way, GM sounds kind of like a stranger with candy at the playground.) Reportedly, the General is experimenting with Google Glass at the Orion Assembly plant near Detroit.

But the connected glasses aren’t the only cool technology that GM is looking to in an effort to improve its position with millennials. The automaker is also trying out 3D laser scanners for analyzing (and then improving) the layouts of its factories. Automotive News also reports that GM is being inventive by pitting various employees from various plants together to see what ideas they can come up with.

It will be interesting to see if GM’s new tactics succeed in luring younger workers? Do you think they’ll fare well?
