General Motors is once again expanding their Ecotec engine brood with the announcement of the next generation of modular Ecotec engines . The new engines will be more adaptable to various global markets and less complex in its manufacturing process, meaning that the Ecotec engines found the world over will have more in common than ever before.

According to Chevrolet, current projections call for more than 2.7 million new Ecotec engines to be built in five global manufacturing locations by 2017. These locations include Shenyang, China; Szentgotthárd, Hungary; Toluca, Mexico; Changwon, South Korea; and right here in America at the Flint, Michigan plant, to which General Motors has pledged a $200 million investment.

“Transportation solutions vary around the world and GM is committed to developing engines matched to the needs of the regions where they’re sold,” said Steve Kiefer, GM vice president, Global Powertrain Engineering, in a press release. “The new engine family is designed to achieve segment-leading refinement and efficiency, and will make its way into five GM brands and 27 models by the 2017 model year.”

11 new Ecotec will be added in that timeframe, including three- and four-cylinder units, 1.0-liter to 1.5-liter units, and turbocharged versions with power ratings that will hit anywhere up to 165 horsepower. Among the first of the new Ecotecs will be a 1.0-liter turbo-three that will propel the Opel ADAM, and a naturally-aspirated 1.5-liter four-cylinder and 1.4-liter turbo-four for the 2015 Chevy Cruze for the Chinese market.
