General Motors announced today that it has earned the US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) 2015 ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year award for Sustained Excellence for its continued commitment to leading the industry in sustainable, environmentally-friendly practices. 2015 marks the fourth year in which GM has earned this particular honor.

“Achieving operational excellence in all we do extends to reducing the environmental impact of how we build our vehicles,” said Greg Martin, GM executive director for sustainability. “We are leveraging our scale to conserve energy and resources throughout the manufacturing process.”

The EPA cites a number of GM’s 2014 practices and achievements that led to a lessened impact on the environment. These include:

  • Reducing energy intensity by 6% on an annual basis
  • Expanding Energy OnStar to GM powertrain facilities
  • Investing $34 million in 30 facilities to promote energy efficiency and water and carbon reduction
  • Collaboration with energy and utility companies
  • Eliminating the use of coal entirely at GM’s Wentzville, Missouri and Detroit-Hamtramck, Michigan plants
  • Placing 70 facilities in the ENERGY STAR Challenge for Industry, which resulted in $196 million in avoided energy costs

“Through its sustained participation with ENERGY STAR, General Motors is helping Americans save money, save energy, and do their part to reduce our nation’s greenhouse gas emissions that fuel climate change,” said EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy. “GM is demonstrating a strong commitment to energy efficiency and to preserving a healthy planet for future generations.”
