Sales of GMC trucks and utility vehicles were down 14% in August, totaling 42,440 units. Retail sales fell 12.8% at a total of 39,145 units.

GMC’s year-over-year decline in sales were brought about by off months for its three biggest volume sellers: Sierra, Terrain, and Acadia. Sierra sales totaled 17,478 units, down 17.7% from the 21,241 units delivered in August 2015. Terrain sales were down 35% with 6,004 units delivered, and sales of the Acadia were down 32.6% with a total of 6,101 units delivered.

Despite the down month, Sierra sales are up 3.2% through eight months with a total of 146,372 trucks delivered. Retail-wise, the Sierra’s year-to-date sales are the best the namebadge has seen in a decade.

The GMC Canyon, Yukon, and Yukon XL all saw double-digit sales increases overall, though they were not enough to offset the losses of GMC’s top three vehicles. Canyon sales were up 38.8% with 3,363 units delivered; Yukon sales were up 18.5% at 5,324 units delivered; and Yukon XL sales were up 59.9% at 3,478 units.

From a retail perspective, the Canyon, Yukon, and Yukon XL were up a respective 39%, 43%, and 66%. The Canyon saw its best August at retail in its history, and the Yukon and Yukon XL saw their best August since 2007. What’s more, August marked 12 consecutive months of year-over-year retail growth for the Yukon.

Also at retail, GMC saw the highest penetration ever for the Denali brand at 28%, facilitating its highest-ever ATP of $45,000.

Through August, GMC’s US sales are down 4% at 348,164 units delivered, and retail sales are down 1.8% at a total of 306,783 units delivered.
