For the second consecutive year, the GMC Canyon earned the top spot in the Midsize Pickup Truck Challenge administered by editors from Cars.com and PickupTrucks.com.

Speaking of the GMC Canyon: Take an in-depth look at the award-winning midize pickup truck

The GMC Canyon was obviously the only premium midsize truck to take part in the tests, since no other mainstream luxury automaker besides GMC currently produces such a vehicle. The four other trucks that took part in the challenge were the 2016 Toyota Tacoma, 2016 Chevrolet Colorado, 2016 Nissan Frontier, and 2017 Honda Ridgeline.

Each midsize truck was tested in 18 objective categories that compared the vehicles head-to-head. The tests lasted an entire week and a couple of the highlights included a 165-mile fuel-economy drive (loaded and unloaded) and a trip to the track to measure acceleration and braking abilities. The trucks were also tested at a road course in Michigan to see how they could perform in thick mud.

Cars.com Editor-In-Chief Patrick Olsen pointed towards the Canyon’s overall engine performance, payload and towing abilities, well-balanced feel, and its well-appointed interior as reasons for the truck winning the challenge for the second year in a row.

“Establishing a benchmark for a premium midsize pickup was our goal with the Canyon, and PickupTruck.com’s insights affirm our instincts,” said Vice President of GMC Sales and Marketing Duncan Aldred. “The Canyon’s quiet cabin, premium design and materials make it a maneuverable solution for customers who want the capability of a pickup with the modern amenities customers expect from GMC.”

Other honors already earned by the GMC Canyon include a spot on the KBB Top 10 List for Residual Value and a spot on Ward’s 10 Best Interiors.
