GMC Closes 2016 with 5.8% Gain in December

GMC sales were up 5.8% in December with a total of 63,415 vehicles delivered. Retail sales were down 3.8% at 50,597 vehicles delivered. The brand wrapped up 2016 with sales totaling 546,628 vehicles in the United States, down 2.2% from 2015, with retail sales falling 1.9% at a total of 474,319 vehicles delivered.

Overall, December was strong for GMC insofar that five of its seven vehicles saw double-digit year-over-year sales increases. Sales of the Acadia rose 67.8% with 12,189 units delivered, boosted by the arrival of the new 2017 model. The Canyon closed out its impressive year with a 34.9% increase at 4,048 units sold. Sales of the Yukon totaled 6,276 units, up 19.1%, while sales of the Yukon XL rose 29.1% at 5,856 units. Sales of the Savana were also up considerably, rising 55.2% year-over-year with 4,316 units.

Sales of the Sierra fell 15.1% at 23,290 units, and sales of the Terrain declined 22.9% at 7,440 units.

At retail, the Acadia saw a 31% year-over-year increase, Yukon and Yukon XL both saw 2% increases, and the Canyon posted its best December ever with a 25% increase. What’s more, the Yukon and Yukon XL helped lead the brand to a near-30% Denali penetration with respective penetration percentages of 61% and 62%. This allowed GMC to set a December retail ATP record of $45,209, finishing off 2016 with a record retail ATP of $43,088.

GMC’s 2016 sales were led by the Sierra, of which the brand sold 221,680 units for a 1.1% year-over-year decrease. Sales of the Acadia totaled 88,466 units (down 8.2%), sales of the Terrain totaled 87,925 units (down 21.5%), sales of the Yukon totaled 53,447 units (up 25.1%), sales of the Yukon XL totaled 37,054 units (up 18.3%), sales of the Canyon totaled 37,449 units (up 24.5%), and sales of the Savana totaled 20,607 units (down 6.3).
