1916 GMC Truck Path to Precision cross-country drive

This 1916 GMC truck is the model that was first taken across the country a hundred years ago

A hundred years ago, the GMC brand made headlines when a husband and wife drove a 1916 GMC pickup truck from Seattle to New York and back. This half-year journey–the likes of which had never been done before–spanned nearly 10,000 miles and proved what GMC vehicles were capable of and that long-distance motor vehicle travel was possible.  The feat of Mr. and Mrs. William Warwick was documented in the 47-page The Story of a Double Transcontinental Trip Made by Mr. and Mrs. William Warwick in a GMC Truck.

Not one to forget its heritage, GMC is commemorating the hundred-year anniversary of this road trip by recreating it in a 2017 GMC Acadia. The progress of the two adventurers–Rob Strok and Alexandra Taylor–has been documented in a series of videos.

Day 1

The adventurers begin their cross-country trip in the new Acadia in Seattle. Their first day involves stops at some of the many wondrous sites in Washington, such as the Snoqualmie Falls to Wanapum Lake. The first 311-mile stretch of the trip takes them across the border to Idaho.

Day 2

After a brief stop in Coeur d’Alene to compare how the route looks now compared to 100 years ago, the GMC travelers conquer the rugged mountains of Montana. The picturesque landscapes are being documented along the way on Instagram; look for the #PathToPrecision tag.

Day 3

Proving that nothing can stand in the way of the 2017 Acadia, Rob and Allie power the SUV up 11,000 feet to Beartooth Pass, followed by a jog through Yellowstone. The footage captured in these National Parks and Forests throughout Montana are truly breathtaking.

Day 4

Going from towering mountains and trees to rolling parries and flatter roads, the crew continues heading East to North Dakota to learn about the history of the state in its capital city. Good thing the Acadia is spacious enough to hold all the gear and luggage needed for this long road trip!

Day 5

Much more than the name of a movie, Fargo is a beautiful city to visit. Comparing one type of transportation to another, the innovations showcased at Fargo’s Air Museum show how much travel has changed in 100 years. Even travelling through rural North Dakota, the Acadia keeps its passengers connected with its 4G Wi-Fi capability.

Day 6

Although the Logging Camp Museum in Wisconsin is pretty cool, the highlight of Day 6 off the GMC Path to Precision trip is the Windy City, for some fun at night on Navy Pier. By this point, the states are becoming much smaller!

Day 7

Taking the Acadia off-road and onto the sand, the trekkers see an oft-overlooked side of Ohio: the sandy savannas and wetlands. Rather than focusing on the city’s industrial heritage, it’s the unique natural beauty that gets highlighted.

Day 8

There’s a lot to see in New York state, and the first day takes place along the shoreline of Lake Erie at the wondrous Niagara Falls. As beautiful as the Acadia is, it’s no match for the majesty of these plunging waterfalls along the Canadian border.

Day 9

Although not far from Niagara Falls, you can’t overlook Buffalo or the nearby Watkins Glen State Park and all its caverns. This final stretch of the trip shows how truly diverse New York state is.

Day 10

Concluding the first-half of the recreated cross-country drive of the Warwick a hundred years ago (yes, they plan on heading back to Seattle soon), the GMC ambassadors end in the iconic Big Apple. New York has changed as much as GMC over the past century, but both are still proof of what makes America great.
