General Motors announced yesterday that its Active Safety Training Area is almost complete and will be fully functional by December. The Active Safety Training Area broke ground in June of last year at the Milford Proving Ground campus and is meant to be a facility to test GM’s new active safety technology.

The new extension of the campus, a 52-acre facility, is a $12 million project for The General. It’ll include a 16-acre dynamics pad and several road networks so that engineers and developers can test out all the bells and whistles behind the safety technology. This is especially important as the brand begins to leave more up to the cars when it comes to safety and even autonomous driving.

We recently ran a highlight on Chevy’s crash avoidance technologies, to give you a picture of some of the tech that could be tested at the Active Safety Training Area, when it is completed.

Already, the Milford Proving Ground has a wide range of safety test capabilities. This new facility will only add to the great work that Milford currently produces.
