In one of the most expensive, legally-challenging, and image-damaging years that General Motors has ever faced, the automaker is still coming out on top. In fact, GM’s third quarter global sales are reportedly the best that The General has seen since 1980, a whopping 34 years ago.

GM CEO, Mary Barra, said in a statement, “GM delivered its best third quarter global sales in 34 years thanks to solid growth in the United States and China, and steady improvement in Opel’s market share. We have launches now underway, including the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon in North America, the Opel/Vauxhall Corsa in Europe, and the Buick Envision and Cadillac ATS-L in China, that will keep our momentum going.”

GM’s two biggest markets, the US and China, have not failed the brand this year. US sales were up 8% and China sales were up 14 %. Year-to-date sales in the US and China shot up 4% and 12% respectively.

In total, GM moved 2,449,595 vehicles globally in the third quarter of 2014, up 2% over the third quarter of 2013. Through September, GM had moved 7,371,743 vehicles globally this year, also up 2%.

Last year, General Motors broke the 3 million marker in China, and the company is on track to do it again. Specifically, GM moved 3.16 million vehicles in China last year, but the automaker hopes to surpass that this year.
