GMSA Dedicates New School Library on Mandela Day

In celebration of Nelson Mandela International Day, which takes place on July 18th in commemoration of the birth of the late activist, General Motors South Africa spent this past Monday enriching the Adolph Schauder Primary School in Schauderville, Port Elizabeth with activities, materials, and new facilities.
Adolph Schauder Primary was previously named GMSA’s beneficiary for the 2016 Adopt-a-School program, and a team of executives, employees, and retirees descended about the school with activities coinciding with the theme of 67 Minutes for Mandela.
With the number taken from the number of years in which Mandela dedicated himself to seeking social justice, the 67 Minutes for Mandela campaign asks citizens of the world to take just 67 minutes from their days to consider ways to fight poverty and injustice and promote worthwhile ideals like peace, harmony, and diversity.
“67 Minutes for Mandela gave us an opportunity to involve our employees and their families in the projects and to witness the initiatives already undertaken by the company in the school. This year so far more than 100 employees and their families generously volunteered their time at the school,” said GMSA Corporate Communications and Public Relations Manager Gishma Johnson.
As part of Mandela Day, GMSA also unveiled the school’s new library—fully stocked with books donated by employees and Oxford Books—as well as a new vegetable garden and refurbished ablution facilities.
“The renovations and improvements instill a sense of value and pride into our learners and teachers,” said Thomas Matthews, principal at Adolph Schauder Primary School. “GMSA’s generous efforts will have a huge positive impact on many learners who will pass through the school in years to come.”
General Motors South America’s other Mandela Day activities included the donation of 67 blankets to Missionvale Care Center and 120 soccer balls to Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber’s United in Sport Mandela Day project.
