GM South Africa Parts Distribution Centre goes landfill-free

General Motors South Africa announced that its Parts Distribution Centre in the Coega Industrial Development Zone near Port Elizabeth has been declared a landfill-free site. The announcement is the latest in a long line of efforts from GM to reduce its environmental footprint by converting facilities around the globe to the zero-to-landfill model of sustainability.

The Parts Distribution Centre is the 43rd General Motors site to receive the landfill-free distinction. GM’s Environmental Group Manager, Africa Ncedisa Mzuzu said that waste generated on-site is recycled in approximately 99.42% of all cases (including use of plastic, paper, metal, wood, cardboard, and non-toxic fluids). The other half-percent of materials used at the center are sent to an energy recovery facility.

“GMSA’s environmental management system is certified to the ISO 14001:2004 standard,” said Mzuzu. The environment is one of the company’s key business imperatives and we have made significant efforts in recent years to mitigate the impact of the business on the environment. The aim is to have all four sites in Port Elizabeth landfill free by 2020.”

The PDC is a 37,000-square-foot warehouse that accommodates an estimated 144,000 part numbers, sending GM Certified parts and accessories to 113 dealers and 21 parts wholesalers in Southern Africa and another 34 GM dealers in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Mzuzu also noted that the company’s Vehicle Conversion and Distribution Centre in Markman Township is undergoing landfill-free validation while the manufacturing plants in Struandale and Kempston Road begin conversion, noting that the average recycling ration for the four facilities as of the end of 2015 was 85.22%.
