At this week’s New York International Auto Show (NYIAS), Volkswagen will unveil their new Golf SportWagen concept for the first time in North America. The SportWagen concept features such advancements as a 4MOTION® all-wheel drive system and the EA288 TDI Clean Diesel engine, and stands as a taste of what is to come in 2015 from the next generation of VW’s popular wagon variant.

A SportWagen version of the VW Golf, pictured above, will be released at NYIAS this week.

The SportWagen concept boasts a body that is lighter and more durable thanks to the implementation of high and ultra-high-strength steels and numerous weight-cutting measures. This new SportWagen manages to be lighter than the Jetta SportWagen while being 1.1 inches longer and .7 inches wider. The Golf SportWagen will also sit .9 inches lower for improved aerodynamics, but will nonetheless have an extra .4 inches of headroom.

When it is offered to the public, the Volkswagen Golf SportWagen will be offered with two powertrains: the 1.8-liter turbocharged and direct-injection four-cylinder TSI, which promises fuel economy improvements of as much as 17 percent, or the EA288 2.0-liter common-rail, turbocharged, and direct-injection diesel engine, which promises 150 horsepower.

The Golf SportWagen concept was designed by Walter de Silva (Group Design) and Klaus Bischoff (VW Brand Design), who changed proportions in order to create “a cab backward impression.” It will sport a completely remodeled front end, including a redesigned hood and more angular design cues.

If Volkswagen plans on bringing any news of the production version of the SportWagen with them to The Big Apple, we haven’t long to wait. For the newest developments out of NYIAS this week, stay tuned to The News Wheel!
