General Motors South Africa has awarded Govender Dharmalingum with the top honor in its annual GMSA Top Technician Skills Award. Dharmalingum’s victory allows him to lay claim to being South Africa’s best technician, and it also earns him a grand prize of 15,000 South African Rand (roughly $1,130 USD) and an all-expenses-paid weekend trip for two to some idyllic location in the country.

“Winning the competition was a dream come true for me, but being recognized by the dealer network for your skills and abilities is a huge honor,” said Dharmalingum, who finished in the top three of the competition in 2014.

Dharmalingum has been working for South Coast Motors in Kwa-Zulu Natal for 22 years, where he serves customers who drive Chevrolet, Opel, and Isuzu vehicles.

“I believe that the customer is always right. When I go to work every day I strive to give our customers my best to make sure that they are happy and satisfied with their vehicles,” he added.

The runners-up this year were Stefan de Wet of Reeds N1 City in Capetown and Quintin Vermeulen of Williams Hunt Pretoria, who won the respective second- and third-place prizes of 10,000 Rand ($752 USD) and 7,500 Rand ($564 USD).
