All things in time must evolve into a more perfect form (the possible exception being the two-party system), and few industries tend to evolve more rapidly than that of automotive. While tires have seen their fair share of changes and upgrades, we’re still required to stop every so often to fill them with air. If Hankook Tire has its way, this too will soon become a thing of the past.

Hankook Tire revealed that it has completed stages of testing on its non-pneumatic tire, the Hankook iFlex. Hankook says that it has been attempting to produce an NPT tire since 2011, and that the iFlex is the most successful of its five efforts.

The iFlex is built using a uni-material that is not only durable and reliable, but also far more recyclable than old-fashioned rubber tires.

“The Hankook iFlex’s ability to deliver the perfect high-speed driving performance is the result of Hankook Tire’s longstanding commitment to independently developing progressive, innovative tire technology. Aiming to strengthen our technological leadership in the global tire market, we will continue to develop cutting edge eco-friendly and future-oriented tires” says Mr. Seung-Hwa Suh, Vice Chairman and CEO of Hankook Tire.

Hankook says that the iFlex tires have passed durability, hardness, stability, slalom, and speed tests. While they are likely a long, long way away from mass-production, it’s certainly a step toward the next stage of evolution for tires as we know it.
