Holden Celebrates Next-Gen Commodore/Insignia Being Named to 2018 World Car of the Year Shortlist
Though it no longer shares space under General Motors’s umbrella, Holden is celebrating the victory of former sister brand Opel in having its next-generation Insignia—imported to Australia as the next-gen Holden Commodore—named to the shortlist for the 2018 World Car of the Year Award.
Despite Opel now being part of the PSA Group, Holden had a major role in co-developing the Insignia to ensure that it would be up to the standards of Aussie drivers. That collaboration is now paying dividends, putting the Insignia/Commodore one step closer to winning one of the world’s most prestigious automotive awards.
“The World Car of the Year awards is judged by automotive journalists from Asia, Europe, and North America. That Insignia has been shortlisted is a testament to the hard work the team in Europe and Australia have put into the vehicle,” said Holden’s Executive Director, Sales, Michael Filazzola. “We’ve shown a handful of local automotive journalists and customers the next-gen Commodore already and the reaction echoes the sentiments of the World Car Awards judges—it’s a cracker!”
Note for the uninitiated: cracker, in this case, is slang for something that is exciting. It does not insinuate that the Holden Commodore is something that is lightly salted and dipped into soups and chilis.
“The World Car of the Year shortlisting shows the next-gen Commodore is based on an already exceptional vehicle,” said Holden Vehicle Performance Manager Jeremy Tassone. “We’ve been working on the car for a while now to make it even better for Australian roads and by the time it lands in the hands of our customers, we’re confident it will demonstrate all of the great driving and technology characteristics Commodore has built its name on.”
The winner of the 2018 World Car of the Year will be announced next March at the New York International Auto Show—just a month after the Holden Commodore is set to arrive at dealerships.
