Holden Commodore Getting Closer to Launch with Performance Tuning and Testing
Before the Holden Commodore can complete its triumphant launch in Australia, it has just a bit more localized testing to get out of the way. Recently, the new Commodore was put to the test in the Victorian Alps, which brought the distance over which the next-gen Commodore has been tested for Australian use past the 100,000-kilometer mark.
Among the aspects of the Holden Commodore that require additional testing are suspension and steering tuning for two variants–the base-level Commodore powered by a 2.0-liter turbo and the high-performance Holden Commodore VXR, which replaces the Holden SS as the brand’s new flagship performance vehicle.

“We’ve worked on a more direct and responsiveness steering feel to give drivers greater confidence and a more engaging experience behind the wheel. That’s in addition to changing the dampers and suspension tune on both 3.6-liter V6 and 2.0-liter turbo variants so the car feels planted and well-balanced,” said Holden Lead Dynamics Engineer Rob Trubiani.
“The 3.6-liter V6 is a great engine, but the surprise package in the range is undoubtedly the 2.0-liter petrol with a nine-speed automatic transmission,” Trubiani added. “Not only is it quicker than our current base model V6, it’s also more frugal.”
The 2.0-liter turbo is the quickest base-level Commodore ever offered by the auto brand, delivering a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) time of just about seven seconds. Its handling and performance has also been rigorously tested via the Captured Test Fleet program, wherein Holden employees drive pre-production vehicles to report issues they notice over the course of daily driving.
“We’ve been collaborating with our colleagues in GM Europe to make sure we’ve been able to apply all of the lessons we’ve learnt in developing Commodores over the last 30 years,” added Trubiani.
The new Holden Commodore will be on the market in early 2018.
