Holden has announced that it has been named the 2017 Official Mardi Car for the 2017 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade, which takes place on March 4th. Holden has the reputation of a brand that holds diversity and inclusion as important tenets, having been the first automotive company in Australia to publicly support marriage equality. Similarly, its partnership with the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade is also a first.

The vehicle in above is a Holden Colorado wearing a stylish rainbow-colored livery. During the festivities, multiple Mardi Cars will carry the likes of singer Steve Grand, comedian Bob Down, and drag queen Cindy Pastel.

GM Rumors: Will Opel Insignia Sports Tourer make the leap to America as a Buick?

“We’re so excited to show our support as the automotive partner of this year’s Mardi Gras. At Holden, we believe in equal rights for all and to be in solidarity with a community our employees are already a part of means a lot,” said Holden Executive Director of Human Resources Ashley Winnett. “In the last year we’ve made some huge steps in the equality and diversity space and not just in our support of LGBT+ campaigns like Mardi Gras, Midsumma Carnival, Fair Day, and marriage equality.

“We’ve also introduced a paid leave policy for employees impacted by family and domestic violence, we’ve extended paid maternity leave to paid paternity leave to give men the same period of paid leave as women, and we worked with Collingwood football club to restructure our sponsorship to better support women’s football and grassroots sport.”

What is perhaps most refreshing about Holden’s press release announcing the sponsorship is that it is not as self-aggrandizing as one might expect from a brand standing up for a social cause. Where Holden does toot its proverbial horn, it does so having backed up its talk in action and deed.

“We know Holden isn’t perfect, and we still have a long way to go, but we’re out and we’re proud and with an exciting weekend ahead, Holden is looking forward to showing support to our friends, colleagues and families in the LGBT+ community.”
