General Motors Holden revealed that it was able to contribute $500,000 AUD to The Smith Family’s Learning for Life program in addition to a sum of $307,000 raised from the auction of three rare Commodores.

The half-million-dollar donation was revealed at the Holden Dream Cruise in Adelaide last month, which was attended by 25,000 enthusiasts who also witnessed the auction of “The Commodore Collection”—including the Director No. 5 V8 automatic, Motorsport No. 5 V8 automatic, and Magnum No. 111 V8 automatic.

“It was truly inspirational to see the passion from the Holden fans and our employees past and present. I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face from start to finish,” said Holden Chairman and Managing Director Mark Bernhard.

Half of the $130,000 bid for the Holden Commodore Director V8 Auto Sedan No. 5 was given to The Lighthouse Foundation, which was represented at the event by Beverly Brock, the former partner of racing legend Peter Brock. With that donation, the grand total given to Learning for Life from the day’s events amounted to $742,000.

The Magnum V8 ute sold to one Michael Steinborner, who paid $84,000 for the privilege to own a piece of Holden history. The Motorsport V8 Sedan sold to Jamie Lockett for $93,000.

“With this generous financial package, we will be able to support more than 1,000 students over five years through our Learning for Life sponsorship program,” said The Smith Family’s General Manager for South Australia and the Northern Territory, Graham Jaeschke. “Learning for Life provides families with financial support for school essentials, such as books and uniforms, and allows access to critical out-of-school learning programs. By giving these students the support they need to succeed at school, we’re giving them the best chance to break the cycle of disadvantage.”
