Honda sold a monthly record 51,075 Accord sedans and coupes in August, putting them above the Toyota Camry and in first place in the August sales race between the competing mid-size cars.

A 33 percent gain in sales pushed the Honda Accord above the Camry for the first time since December. In total, Honda has sold 271,426 Accords this year, which Toyota handily topped with 306,471 Camry sales. However, Honda insists that if you don’t count Toyota’s many commercial consumers (which include rental car agencies and businesses), more everyday car customers are actually buying Accords than are buying Camrys.

Perhaps even more impressively, the Accord also passed the Chevy Silverado pickup to become the second best-selling vehicle in America in the month of August.

Roughly 49,000 Silverados were sold in August, with an accelerating Chrysler Ram pickup right behind them with about 44,000 sales.

In green car news, the Nisan LEAF is seeing an improvement after years of less than stellar sales. The company moved a monthly record 3,200 LEAFs in August, a 32 percent gain from August 2013 sales. So far, 19,000 units have been sold in 2014, which is a 34 percent increase from the first eight months of last year.

Tesla, meanwhile, fell back a few more laps (how tired are you of these racing analogies?) as sales of its Model S electric luxury car fell 18 percent to just 1,600 units moved in August. Overall, sales for the year have decreased 1 percent down to 12,200. The plug-in hybrid Chevy Volt is also far removed from victory lane (ok, that’s the last one, I promise) as their sales are down 12 percent to a little over 13,000 Volts sold.

Cadillac (sales down 18 percent last month), MINI (down 17 percent), and Volkswagen (down 13 percent) were also losers in August.
