Honda ASIMO Robot Meets With San Jose STEM Students
City Year students pose with Honda’s ASIMO humanoid robot at a recent STEM education event
The Honda ASIMO humanoid robot was greeted as a rock star by a group of middle school students who had come to the Honda Silicon Valley Lab in California for a special demonstration. Though ASIMO is eventually meant to serve as a sort of butler for humans, at the moment he is best at wowing young people and inspiring them to pursue STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) careers.

During the presentation, Honda engineers talked to students from the City Year/San Jose program about their own personal experiences and reasons for pursuing a STEM-related career. The demonstration of Honda Robotics technologies included not just ASIMO, but also the UNI-CUB, Honda’s personal mobility device.
“Highlighting real-world applications of Honda Robotics technologies shows students the limitless possibilities of innovation, and what’s possible by dreaming big,” said Erik Wedin, manager of Corporate Relations for American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “For example, ASIMO currently operates in indoor environments, but one of these students may someday find a way to change that.”
This recent ASIMO presentation in San Jose is just the latest way in which Honda is encouraging STEM education, which the company does through a variety of initiatives. For over a decade, ASIMO has traveled around the world to give students the unique opportunity to see a humanoid robot up close and personal. Additionally, Honda also provides grants to STEM learning organizations through the American Honda Foundation.
