Rumor: Honda Civic Type R is Coming to America
The 2015 Civic Type R has been making mouths water ever since Honda promised that the new high-performance model would be the “most extreme Type R yet” once it hits European showrooms next year. Sadly, American auto enthusiasts have only been able to enjoy the Civic Type R from afar as a foreign film star in the promo video “The Other Side.” Honda has had a “look but don’t touch” policy for those of us here in the states (and actually, that one that we looked at in “The Other Side” wasn’t even a real Type R). However, new rumors suggest that all of that may be changing soon.
The Spanish car site Motor y Racing (three years of high school Spanish has taught us that means “Motor and Racing”) is reporting that there is a good chance the Honda Civic Type R is coming to America. Specifically, the Type R’s 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine – which produces between 276 and 320 ponies – is supposedly making the journey overseas, and it is probably safe to assume that an upgraded suspension, rolling stock, and other performance components would probably also be made available.
In Europe, the Honda Civic Type R is a hot hatch, but in America, the Civic is only available in sedan and coupe form. So, most likely, the US version of the Civic Type R would be something that’s unique to our market. Merry Christmas to us!
Another rumor suggests that the Type R engine is actually coming to the US to be made available in the CR-Z, which Honda recently released a supercharger kit for. If forced to choose between an American Civic Type R and a 320-hp CR-Z, this would be our decision:
