The Happy Honda Days were good to American Honda Motor Co.—not only did the brand enjoy its best-ever December sales last month, but the seasonal sales event also capped off the automaker’s best-ever year. The Honda division set a new annual record in 2015, with sales of 1,409,386 total units, good for a 2.6% increase over 2014.

“What better way to celebrate the ‘Year of Honda’ than with an all-time automobile sales record?” asked Honda executive VP John Mendel. “We are grateful to our customers who embraced our entire product lineup and are the true power behind the Honda brand.”

More than one million of Honda’s 2015 sales can be credited to the profitable triad of the Civic (335,384 units sold), CR-V (345,647), and Accord (355,557). It was also a good year for the Honda Odyssey minivan (127,736) and Pilot SUV (136,212), as well as the subcompact Fit (52,724).

Honda’s record-breaking year was helped tremendously by the big push the brand made in December, with a 12.2% month-over-month increase in car and truck sales.

“While we are excited about the all-time sales record, we continue to have incredible momentum driven by the relentless cadence of new and successful products we introduced in 2015 that will give the Honda brand tremendous energy going into the new year,” said Honda Division senior vice president Jeff Conrad. “With a similar pace of new products coming this year, we’re anticipating a very robust 2016.”

The Acura RDX set an all-time sales record in 2015, leading the luxury brand with 51,026 units

Honda’s luxury brand, Acura, had its best year since 2007, with sales of 177,165 vehicles. As usual, the Acura RDX and MDX were the brand’s bread and butter, with each exceeding 50,000 sales in 2015. The Acura TLX sedan also had a strong 2015, with 47,080 units sold.

“The Acura brand continues on its steady march, now four years strong— with both our sales and brand power gaining increasing momentum with both trucks and sedans,” said Jon Ikeda, vice president and general manager of the Acura division. “Importantly for our future, Acura sedans continue to gain strength – which will be our critical focus in the next phase of our strategic plan.”
