Honda FCV American Debut Set for Next Month’s Detroit Auto Show

The new Honda FCV Concept, which will debut next month in Motor City

Honda announced today that the 2015 North American International Auto Show in Detroit will be the chosen venue for the Honda FCV American debut. The Honda FCV Concept will be unveiled to North Americans on January 12th, introducing those of us here in the US to the next big thing in fuel cell vehicle technology.

Honda already gave the FCV its world premiere last month in the automaker’s home country of Japan, where the next fuel-cell vehicle is expected to launch by March 2016. After that, the Honda FCV – which emits only water vapor and has an anticipated driving range that exceeds 300 miles – is expected to begin selling here in the US.

For Americans who are looking forward to owning an FCV for themselves, the largest impediment right now is the lack of infrastructure for refueling stations. That’s why Honda also announced during the Honda FCV Concept’s world debut that the company would invest $13.8 million towards building additional hydrogen refueling stations throughout the state of California. Whether the rest of the country will eventually embrace fuel cell vehicles remains to be seen. We may have to wait until fuel prices shoot back up to get car consumers interested in alternative energy sources again.
