Honda Canada announces investment in Ontario Manufacturing Plains

Today Honda of Canada Manufacturing announced a $492 million investment in modernizing its Ontario manufacturing facilities and reducing its carbon footprint over the next three years.

This newest commitment brings the total of Honda’s Canadian facilities investments to over $4.7 billion. The carbon reduction initiative is part of Honda’s global goals, and to achieve those aims, Honda Canada is partnering with the Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario on this program, with both the federal and Ontario governments providing conditional grants of up to $41.8 million each.

“Thank you to both the federal and Ontario governments for creating an environment which will allow us to further modernize our manufacturing facilities and make innovative upgrades possible, including building a state-of-the-art paint shop which will reduce the GHG emissions from our paint process by 44%, further reducing our manufacturing carbon footprint in Canada,” said Jerry Chenkin, President and CEO of Honda Canada Inc.  “As a result of these upgrades, HCM will continue to provide thousands of well-paying, high quality jobs in Alliston and throughout Canada.”

In a press release, Honda Canada said that the new investment will also enable greater research and development activities in the field of manufacturing technologies, allowing Honda and HCM to remain vital to the economic well-being of Canada’s automotive industry.

“Our government’s support for advanced-manufacturing platforms and clean technology in the auto sector is a key part of our plan to drive economic growth through innovation to create a better Canada.  That means better jobs, better opportunities and better living standard for all Canadians,” said Navdeep Bains, federal Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development.

“Technology and innovation never stand still, so it’s essential that Ontario’s auto sector remains globally competitive,” added Brad Duguid, Ontario Minister of Economic Development and Growth. “Honda is a cornerstone of our sector — accounting for about 17% of Ontario’s vehicle output. With this partnership, the company and provincial and federal governments are joining forces to ensure that Honda’s skilled Alliston team remains a leader in building the vehicles of tomorrow.”
